Here are some comments regarding legislative affairs in South Carolina provided by Colonel Thomas. A. Robillard, our MOAA SC State Council VP for Legislative Affairs:

“I am attaching a SC Legislative Update that I will be presenting to the Columbia MOAA Chapter at their Annual Membership meeting. The data is pertinent as an update for all military as we start the Legislative year. You will see an article from the Columbia State Newspaper, that may appear that we won the SC Military Retiree Exemption from State Income tax. I wish it were so, and that easy! 

We have just succeeded in getting it through the Ways and Means SUB-Committee in the SC House.  We have at least 8-10 more hurdles to get it through to gain full exemption.  A good start for sure, but failure in any gate along the way, in either chamber sets us back. 

I have to apologize to you for the error on my part. I indicated the proceedings this week would be streamed. Lesson learned here. In the future I will point you to the archived copy of the SC Legislative Website when I have validated the future proceedings.  I don't want to confuse you or waste your time.

I hope the update helps clarify where we are legislatively in SC.  You are welcome to use it to spread support for our veterans as we proceed down the highway of moving along military legislation for our active duty and retirees. I have included two attachments for your information and use. One is the update PDF, and a second PDF is the military related bills that have been proposed or moved forward at this point.”
