Colonel Allan T. Smith is a native of Philadelphia PA. After enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1958, he joined the Aviation Cadet program. After graduating from navigation school, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Subsequent technical training included Electronic Warfare School and entry into the B-52 aircrew training program.

His first operational assignment was Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico with participation in armed airborne alert missions in support of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

B-52 operations from Ellsworth AFB, SD involved combat missions over Vietnam. Included was an opportunity to visit the Army’s 28th Division, in Vietnam to discuss the abilities and capabilities of the B-52 to a using command. This proved to be an extremely enlightening experience for both the flight crews and the guys in the trenches

A tour in Viet Nam was completed in the EC-47 Electric Goony Bird, conducting air borne electronic reconnaissance.

In a career change, he was assigned to the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing in Omaha, NE. Activity in the RC-135 Airborne Reconnaissance program included temporary duty in Alaska, England, Japan, and Athens, Greece.

After 10 years in the B-52 and 10 years in the RC-135 Airborne Electronic Reconnaissance activity, Colonel Smith was attached to the National Security Agency with tours in Misawa AFB and Yokota AFB, Japan and Hickam AFB, Hawaii.

Memorable highlights from Misawa include his first intimate contact with the enlisted force. The command of 1000 of the Air Force’s brightest young people was a tour to remember. An operational highlight was coordinating the intelligence efforts involved with the Russian shoot-down of KAL 007.

Colonel Smith remains associated with flying in the general aviation field with the Low Country Air Service and activity with the South Carolina Civil Air Patrol.

He is married to the former Martha (Marty) Carpenter of Long Beach, CA. They have two children. Daughter, Kadra, is living in Charleston and son, Terry, resides in San Jose, CA.
